Medication Trick or Treat!

Halloween has come and gone, but a lot of people are still saying trick or treat when they go to their doctor for pain. Statistics show that as many as 70% of doctor visits are for muscle and joint pain, pain that can easily and effectively be treated with any of the following: Chiropractic, Massage, Acupuncture, Exercise, Proper Nutrition. These things require the patient to become actively involved in their own health care, a commitment that is more labor intensive than simply popping a pill. For those that have never seen a Chiropractor a common concern is for safety, fear not, statistics show a complication rate for neck adjustments to be 1 in 5.85 million and for adjustments to the low back to be even less.  Want a real scare, click here to see what the CDC has to say about Americans' addiction to drugs.  So before you considering throwing that little pill into your mouth, consider a safer more natural approach to your life.

Our Thursday Greeter

This is Lexi, she is our Thursday greeter, but she also gets to come on days when it is storming. She normally has at least 2 or 3 children piled on top of her, in-fact we have folks just stop by to say hi to her, not to see us mind you, Her.
Lexi watching the front door, don't worry even if you accidentally step on her she won't move.

This is a rare sighting, standing up and alert.

Don't Hibernate This Winter

Dr. Jill Unwin Blue Mounds State Park.

The days are turning cold and the daylight is fading, but don't become a bear this winter avoid the pitfalls of hibernation, unlike bears you will probably not come out from your long winter slumber 50lbs slimmer. Although it may seem just to difficult to get out and do something keep in mind that the hardest part is just getting out that door, once you make it past that point its easy to keep going. There are many great things to do here in Wisconsin, such as: cross country skiing, snowshoeing, skating, even sledding is a fun interval activity. I know the argument is that it's to cold, however I always like to remind folks that others travel to the top of Everest, North and South Pole and all manner of frigid land in between, so that excuse just doesn't work. I had a good friend sum it up this way, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes." So no excuses, get out and enjoy winter before its gone and the dreaded summer returns.

Orthotics

Q. I was told that Orthotics might help my back: how does that work?

A. Orthotics properly stabilize the arches of your feet providing a solid foundation for the rest of your body.  They work to maintain the foot’s structure and functionality; this provides greater balance when you stand, walk, run, or bike.  They also assist in dampening the impact that is transmitted into the legs, hips, and back during these activities.  Whether you have flat, normal, or high arches, orthotics will make not only your feet feel better they will make your entire body feel better.  Unwin Chiropractic & Wellness Center can take a detailed scan of your feet and create a custom orthotic just for you.  To feel the difference a custom orthotic can make, simply call and make an appointment today.

Scoliosis Question

Every month we do a Q & A from questions we get here at Unwin Chiropractic & Wellness Center. These Q & A session are then submitted to the Verona Press. We thought that there are probably a number of people out there who don't receive our local publication, so we are going to start running these each month on our blog.
Q: My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with a slight scoliosis. Is there anything that can be done to help correct this?
A: The cause of scoliosis is not completely understood, however, there are chiropractic and massage therapy treatments that work to facilitate a more normal spinal development. Scoliosis is a condition seen in 3-5 of every 1000 children and affects girls between the ages of 10-16, seven times that of boys of the same age. Chiropractic treatment involves adjustments of the vertebrae that are turning or twisting, essentially assisting the bone in a more normal developmental process. In conjunction with this chiropractors will prescribe certain strength and flexibility exercises. These exercises are designed to strengthen the weak side of the spine and create flexibility on the tight side of the spine. This helps create a better balance in the muscles, which again helps in the spinal development. Massage Therapy can also be beneficial for scoliosis. Massage Therapy works to release the muscle on the inside or concave side of the spine in order to reduce the tension of the muscles that are pulling the spine. Early detection is key to preventing years of suffering, however if a scoliosis is determined you must act immediately to help hold the line on its development. If you have concerns about your child’s spine please contact us for a free screening during the month of November.

Scoliosis Screenings

November is Kids Month here at Unwin Chiropractic and Wellness Center. We will be providing free scoliosis screenings for kids every Saturday, simply make an appointment by calling 608-848-1800. You don't need to be a current patient and it only takes a few minutes. We know that these screenings are done in schools, however not all schools provide true professionals who know what to look for. Early detection is key, you may not be able to stop scoliosis, but you can help limit the progression and severity.
